I learned this recipe years ago from another actor while we were in The Diary of Anne Frank together. It might be the cheapest, easiest meal ever, and it quickly became a staple for me whenever I was working out of town. I think some would refer to it as “dahl” – an Indian Spicy lentil soup. It’s tasty, and warm and comforting in the winter. And cheap. So very cheap.
One can of diced tomatoes
One can of lentils
One can of chickpeas
Two tablespoons curry powder
Use a large pot. Sauté the onion in the butter until soft. Add the curry powder. Turn on the fan in your hotel room because you’re cooking at 1:30 a.m. and don’t want your neighbours to smell the curry. Pause for ten minutes while trying desperately to open all the canned goods with the world’s crappiest can opener. Add all canned goods, and simmer for ten minutes. Eat for many days afterward.
